Problem with USB-2-485

I have just bought an adapter USB-2-485 in Conrad. I have followed the intruction manual and connected it to the USB port of the computer using the USB cable provided. However, when doing this nothing happens. Contrary to what it says in the manual, no "new hardware" assistent pops-up in WinXP. I have tried different USB ports and different computers and the result is always the same. I have also tried to manually looking for the adapter using the Hardware assistent of WinXp, but I cannot find it. I am starting to think that the device might be defective...

Any ideas?. Thank you.

This really looks like a defective device (although they all have been tested before they were shipped). Please exchange it (via Conrad).
