New Patent Pending stealthChop™ Technology Delivers Exceptionally Quiet Stepper Motor Performance

Hamburg, Germany (20-10-2014) - TRINAMIC Motion Control, a leading global developer of motor and motion control technologies, today revealed its latest patent pending technology for stepper motors. Dubbed stealthChop, the new technology significantly reduces the noise of conventional stepper motor operation.

Motors operating at low speed exhibit a phenomenon known as magnetostriction, which causes an audible low frequency 'hum.' This low-frequency noise is well known as the 60Hz hum that emanates from transmission lines and transformers. Trinamic’s stealthChop minimizes magnetostriction by implementing a PWM algorithm that relies predominantly on voltage modulation for motor control at lower speeds. This technology minimizes PWM current fluctuation, which is the primary cause of low-speed hum.

Dual Axis Stepperdriver for CCTV Positioning

Trinamic’s new TMC5031 stepper motor controller-driver IC is a powerful system-on-a-chip, integrating sophisticated ramp-generators, bus interface and two power stages plus best-in-class diagnostics and protection in a tiny 7 by 7 mm² QFN package. Developed with a focus on the fast growing CCTV camera market – for motion control of the pan and tilt axes – the component is well suited for other areas that require precise positioning, e.g. in medical, industrial or consumer applications. The functionality embedded in the components allows for superior results concerning motor control, without the need of a deep understanding of motor physics. The new IC is a game changer in arenas where time to market has highest priority, but miniaturization and cost are of importance.
